Witness Post: Border Inn & Casino
Located on U.S. Highways 50 and 6 and smack dab on the border of Utah and Nevada, we’re only about 13 miles away from the Great Basin National Park, which boasts unbelievable features like the historic Lehman Caves and the picturesque Wheeler Peak. Not to mention, Great Basin National Park is the locale of some of the darkest skies in the nation, making it perfect for an evening of stargazing. Sounds charming, right?
It is also an unratable abomination that gives “Inn” a bad name. The motel where we had reservations to stay for the night, Whispering Elms, located in the town of Baker, Nevada, was closed due to a water malfunction. I got a call on my cell phone the day before our arrival. The operator said he had to cancel all reservations until the water situation was fixed. The caller suggested we camp at the RV park nearby or in the tent camping area. We had neither a camper nor a tent. Too bad for us, as there are no other places we could find to sleep at the last minute. So the Border Inn & Casino it was.

Tracy did not feel comfortable in the room and did not like anything about it. She even slept in her clothes, lest she be too close to the hotel sheets, which smelled like airconditioned drying. The television did not work on any recognizable channels, so we were relegated to the muzak from some of the game shows that we could receive. The Casino? It seemed to be a set of slot machines and a lotto machine that was available in a dark room. We did not check out the menu.
The one redeeming quality of the visit to Baker was the Sunday Service at the Baker Community Church, which had prayers, and hymns, and readings that were perfect for the occasion. The elders showed some excellent hospitality and charity.
As they say in the brochures: “The Border Inn Casino is located on the Utah-Nevada Border on Highway 6 and historic Highway 50, “America’s Loneliest Road.” This is a wide open expanse of stunning Great Basin landscape. The Border Inn Casino is only 13 miles from majestic Great Basin National Park , 13,000-foot Wheeler Peak , and popular Lehman Caves . At night, guests can also experience the darkest skies in the nation! In 2016, Great Basin National Park was designated an International Dark Sky Park . The Border Inn Casino is a convenient central outpost for access to all these magnificent, diverse, and unique Great Basin sites.”
