Word Smith: Vetiver
There was a house for sale on a street in our neighborhood that had the sign out front for Vetiver Street realtors. I pointed this sign out to our daughter, Kathleen, and she immediately replied: “That word refers to one of the aroma therapy fragrances I enjoy the most.” Thinking it was the name of a realtor and not a spice, oil or herb, it was time for some research.
According to Seattle based Parfumerie Nasreen, Vetiver is a tropical bunchgrass known for its deep, fibrous roots that are used for soil stabilization, and for its fragrant essential oils. The aromatic oils are extracted from the root clusters. The aromas are prized in perfumes and aroma therapy treatments for their earthy, grounding scent and calming effects. They are known for reducing stress and anxiety, and helping initiate sleep. This versatile grass, also called ‘khus,’ is cultivated in India, Haiti, Java, and other tropical regions, offering cooling properties in mats and aiding skin health, though the potent oil requires dilution for topical use. There is also a compelling read about this remarkable plant in Wikipedia, which is worth a look. As you search, you may discover the perfect soil stabilizer, perfume, essential oil, skin care lotion, aroma therapy, stress reducer and sleeping aid. With its expansive properties it could be a floor wax and a dessert topping, as the old Saturday Night Live joke goes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysopogon_zizanioides [2]
